MINNANO SUNAGAWA FACTORY BY SHIRO

The project is a factory of the cosmetic brand Shiro, located in Sunagawa City, Hokkaido. The city which once prospered from the nearby coal mine is now slowly declining. Upon facing the decline of the brand’s hometown, the founder of Shiro decided to rebuild their factory, together with a new shop and café. The intention was to make a place not only for visitors but also for the local community.
When the architects first visited the former factory, they felt a sense of liveliness and energy from the workers, something remarkable in the sparsely populated town. This led to the idea of opening the factory. The factory and visitor area are separated only by a single pane of glass, and the entire manufacturing process runs side by side with the visitor area.
The elevated roofs allow entry of natural light. Sunlight from the clerestory windows is diffused in the visitor space before entering the factory, where careful direct sunlight control is mandatory. The aim was to create a space where production and consumption, now separated in this modern day, can coexist in a natural way.

みんなの工場

北海道砂川市に建つ、化粧品ブランドの工場。創業地、砂川の衰退が進む現状に対して一石を投じたいという創業者の思いから、新工場を建設するにあたり、ショップやカフェなどの商業スペースだけでなく、市民の方が自由に居られる空間を合せて計画し、砂川市のまちづくりにつなげていくことを意図したプロジェクトである。
旧工場を見学した際、工場で働いている人々の活気が街の空気を先導できると感じ、工場を開くことを大きなコンセプトとした。工場と来客エリアはガラス一枚で区切られ、製造工程の一連のプロセスが、来客スペースと隣り合わせとなっている。
来客エリアには越屋根を複数設けることで、直射日光を嫌う工場に対して自然光を拡散して取り込むとともに、一室空間の来客エリアを異なる居心地の複数のスペースに分節している。現代では切り離されがちな生産と消費が自然な形で共存できる場を目指した。
